Building for the future
on the foundations of the past
In 1576, the first purpose-built theatre in London
opened. Known simply as “The Theatre”, it was the prototype
of theatre buildings which have evolved over the centuries. The site,
and some remains, have recently been discovered – the Holy Grail of
British Theatre.
Burbage and his men left the original landlord with
a site but no theatre. This is a marvellous opportunity to complete the
circle and bring public theatre back to its first London home, raising
another new playhouse where Shakespeare and Burbage once trod the
boards, classic plays were premiered and where Londoners of the 16th
Century flocked to see the latest show.
There's now a unique opportunity to build a new
theatre on the site – follow the links to see details of the plans, and how you
can help create a 21st Century stage in London's Shoreditch. The project is well under way -
read all the news in our latest update.
Last year, the Museum of London completed
an excavation of the site, and revealed part of the wall of “The
Theatre” and some other remains, including the rare 16th century
pottery fragment. There's been a lot of extensive media coverage across the world.
