Who We are
Tavistock Repertory Guarantors Ltd. and The Tower Theatre Company
Tavistock Repertory Guarantors Ltd. (TRGL) is a registered charity and a limited company committed to fostering the arts and education.
It operates in association with The Tower Theatre Company, one of the longest-established non-professional theatre companies in London.
Both organisations are run almost entirely by volunteers.
The Tower Theatre Company was founded in 1932 to provide high quality, broadly based, affordable drama and to
enable people of all ages and backgrounds to experience every aspect of theatre. It has over 700 members and friends and presents
up to 18 productions a year. From 1952 to 2003 TRGL rented premises in Canonbury, Islington as a performance and production
base for the Tower Theatre Company and a hub for educational and community arts activities.
TRGL has acquired the freehold of a disused warehouse in Shoreditch, Hackney, which stands on the remains "The Theatre", London’s first purpose-built playhouse, which was built in 1576 and was where Shakespeare worked in the mid 1590s. We have been granted planning permission to build a new 135 seat theatre and production centre on the site. This will be both a new permanent base for the Tower Theatre Company, and a valuable resource for other community and arts activities. The charitable objects of The Tavistock Repertory Guarantors Ltd (registered charity no. 219947) are : "To promote, maintain, improve and advance education, particularly by the support of the work of the unincorporated body known as the Tavistock Repertory Company (now the Tower Theatre Company) in the production of educational plays, operas and other stage presentations, and the encouragement of the arts, including the arts of drama, mime, dance, singing and music."
